The Humanities: Modern Foreign Languages


B Y DEVELOPING FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS, you experience the satisfaction of meaningful communication with people you might otherwise never get to know. The faculty encourages you to study the literature of the language you’re learning and to live for a time in a country in which the language is spoken. In fact, if you major in French or Spanish, you’re required to study abroad in a country of native speakers of those languages. For other languages, you can choose from additional overseas programs.

Majors and Minors: French, Spanish, German Literature, German Studies

Courses in: Italian, Japanese, Russian

Tutorials in: Arabic, Chinese

Beyond-the-classroom opportunities: Language Learning Center, software, authoring tools, and CD-ROM library, independent study, directed reading. Language Exchange Alliance of Delaware, (LEAD), Phi Sigma Iota (foreign language honorary society), Delta Phi Alpha (German language honorary society), VIVA (promotes the cultures of Latin America). Study abroad in more than 20 countries, including the University of Salamanca, Spain, the third-oldest university in Europe. Student board.
