The Humanities: Philosophy


I F YOU MAJOR IN PHILOSOPHY, you’ll master fundamental intellectual skills such as critical thinking, logic, and the composition of sustained argument, all the context of discussion and writing-oriented courses. You’ll receive a thorough grounding in the most important traditions of ancient and modern philosophy, as well as major recent movements such as existentialism, pragmatism, and Marxism. You’ll have many opportunities to study the application of philosophy in contemporary fields such as law, religion, and science. The department places a particularly strong emphasis on ethics and social-political philosophy, which makes for lively discussion.
