Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware Community to Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday DELAWARE, OH – Ohio Wesleyan University and the Delaware County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a program exploring the theme of “What Role Will You Play?” The program will feature events to highlight, celebrate, and emulate the King legacy, said Rosalind D. Scott, chair of the celebration committee. The 2011 celebration will begin with the 26th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day worship service at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, at Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, 140 S. Washington St., Delaware. The speaker will be Dr. Roy Reed, professor emeritus of worship and church, Methodist Theological School in Ohio, and former minister of music at Asbury United Methodist Church in Delaware. He will discuss “Revolution and Reform.” Reed earned bachelor of arts and music degrees from the University of Redlands in California and a doctorate from Boston University. The 2011 MLK celebration will continue Monday, Jan. 17, with the 18th annual Martin Luther King Day breakfast celebration at 8:30 a.m. on the Ohio Wesleyan campus. The event will be held in the Benes Rooms, Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave. The breakfast buffet opens at 7:45 a.m. The program will include a showing of the documentary film “Mighty Times: The Children’s March,” which outlines civil rights activity in Birmingham, Ala., during the early 1960s. Individual breakfast tickets are $20, with eight-person table sponsorships available for $160. For reservations, contact Scott at (740) 368-3386 or at rdscott@owu.edu. Table sponsorships help to fund Delaware County MLK Scholarships and underwrite the cost of student attendance at the breakfast. Since 1990, the Delaware County Martin Luther King Celebration Committee has awarded a total of more than $15,000 in scholarships to county youth. The OWU President’s Commission on Racial and Cultural Diversity will sponsor “M”otivation Day 2011 (PDF flyer*) on Jan. 17 with the theme “What Role Will You Play?: As We Strive for Justice for All.” The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 17 in Benes Rooms A and B of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center. Clips from the documentary “Mighty Times: The Children’s March” will be shown. In a show of support, solidarity, and community, attendees are asked to wear black shirts. Attendees also are encouraged to bring a brown-bag lunch to enjoy during the event.
