![]() Faculty & Staff Every member of the 137-member Ohio Wesleyan University faculty is dedicated to teaching undergraduate students. All Ohio Wesleyan programs are strong and rigorous, and faculty members are fully engaged with their students. Students can select from 80 majors in 22 departments and nine interdisciplinary programs including:
The faculty includes the president-elect of the American Ornithologists’ Union, the 2007 recipient of the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize, the author of a new and comprehensive analysis of Virgil’s Aeneid, a widely produced playwright, a 500+-game-winning soccer coach and recipient of the 2007 National Soccer Coaches Association’s Honor Award, and nationally known experts on global security, Iran, ecological issues, and the psychology of memory, to name only a few. This year, Ohio Wesleyan’s Education Department received accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) without provision, which is a testament to the excellence of the program’s faculty and program. Faculty members help students follow their own inclinations and passions and assist them in developing rigorous programs of study across multiple fields. Last year, for example, a student graduated with majors in pre-medicine, politics and government, and genetics. “The faculty here worked with me in ways I don’t think I’d find somewhere else,” she says, “ … and they never tried to discourage me or tell me I was too ambitious.” Members of the faculty work closely with students in a wide variety of fields. Each year, the Summer Science Research Program gives students an opportunity to conduct research with faculty mentors over a 10-week period. These research projects often result in undergraduates’ work being published in prestigious national journals. This year, Ohio Wesleyan also was awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to serve as a site for the Undergraduate Research Experience and Teacher Research Experience during the summers from 2007–2009. Faculty encourage Ohio Wesleyan students to present their research at large national conferences, either orally or in poster form, and they help prepare the students to excel at these presentations. For example, last year at the Sigma Xi National Meeting and Undergraduate Research Conference, three posters in the Physics and Astronomy category received Superior rankings. Two of these superior presentations were by Ohio Wesleyan students. In the last year, students, with the guidance of faculty, have also presented research at the Microscopy Society of America, the American Society of Microbiology, the National Speleological Society, and the Wilson Ornithological Society. Because of the close relationships that develop between faculty and students, faculty members are uniquely qualified to recommend students for internships and research opportunities. In the last few years, Ohio Wesleyan students have worked at Congressional offices, the Federal Reserve, hospitals and research centers, the Kennedy Center, the Columbus Zoo, the Buenos Aires Herald, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Field Museum, among many others. Ohio Wesleyan boasts several centers and programs in which students are exposed to the finest scholarship and opportunities for practical application of learning: The Woltemade Center for Economics, Business, and Entrepreneurship; the Arneson Institute for Practical Politics and Public Affairs; and the Sagan National Colloquium programs are often imitated, but never duplicated. The fine arts, music, and theater & dance faculty are all working professionals who create a community in which those who are accomplished in their fields offer both intellectual and real-world perspectives to aspiring artists. In short, Ohio Wesleyan faculty members are excellent scholars, teachers, and mentors who inspire the best in their students.
