Assistant Professor of Africana, Gender, and Identity Studies

Ohio Wesleyan University is excited to grow its newly created interdisciplinary Department of Africana, Gender, and Identity Studies with a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek applicants who bring to their teaching and research an intersectional lens focused on issues of race, ethnicity, and class in the U.S. The area of specialization is open, but we are interested in candidates who hold an interdisciplinary Ph.D. (e.g. in African American Studies, American Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, Feminist Studies, or a related interdisciplinary field). Candidates are expected to contribute courses that can be cross-listed in an Arts or Humanities discipline.

The successful applicant will teach three courses per semester at the introductory and advanced levels; cultivate meaningful mentoring relationships with students; create experiential learning opportunities as part of Ohio Wesleyan’s signature program, The OWU Connection; and maintain a productive research agenda. We also seek an engaged and visionary partner invested in shaping the development of this new interdisciplinary department and contributing to the intellectual life of the university. Applicants must submit:

  1. A cover letter that includes a statement of their research interests, courses that they would be interested in teaching, and in which they address their qualifications for close interaction between faculty and students in a collaborative setting and interest in mentoring undergraduate students;
  2. A curriculum vitae;
  3. Three letters of reference;
  4. A statement of teaching philosophy;
  5. A diversity, equity, and inclusion statement in which candidates discuss addressing how they will help to address issues of racial disparity and mentor students from marginalized groups, first-generation students, backgrounds, and students from low-income backgrounds on campus through their teaching and mentorship;
  6. Evidence of teaching ability, including evaluations when available;
  7. Official graduate school transcripts.
