All eligible gifted/talented students may submit an application to apply for OWjL Camp. Following are steps to help with the process.

2019 Camp Dates

  • June 9-14, 2019, currently (at time of application) in grades 6 and 7

  • June 16-21, 2019, currently (at time of application) in grades 7 and 8

  • June 23-28, 2019, currently (at time of application)in grades 6 and 7

Who Completes Which Form?

  1. Applicants must complete the Student Form and write an essay from the prompt below. Be sure to write your essay first. You will need to attach it to your Student Form online.
  2. Applicant’s parent/guardian must complete the Parent Form.
  3. Applicants must ask school personnel (principal, guidance counselor, or gifted/talented teacher/specialist) to complete the School Form.
  4. Applicants must ask two teachers, who have taught them in the last twelve months, to each complete a Teacher Recommendation Form. At least one must be an academic class teacher.

Who Sends the Forms?

  • Hard copies of completed Teacher Recommendation Forms and School Forms may be returned to the applicant in a sealed envelope so they can be mailed, unopened, to the OWjL Office by the applicant, along with the Student and Parent Form, or
  • Mailed directly to the OWjL Office by school officials/teachers, or
  • Submitted electronically by school personnel using forms provided on this website.
  • Applicants mail completed hard copies directly to the OWjL Office unless the school is coordinating the application mailing process.

Important Things to Know:

  • Either the applicant or the school may coordinate the application mailing process. However, it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all forms are received by the deadline.
  • Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  • No faxed copies will be accepted.
  • Do not send money with the application.
  • Be considerate of school personnel and request references well in advance of deadlines.
  • Mail your application on time. The number of students who apply exceeds the available spaces and late applications will be added to the wait list.

Deadlines:

  • Postmark or Online - Camper applications must be postmarked or submitted online by January 31, 2019.
  • Financial Aid - by or before March 1, 2019. If you are applying for financial aid, you must send a completed financial aid application with a copy of the required supporting documentation. See the scholarships page. You will be applying for financial aid BEFORE you know if your child has been accepted.

Essay Prompt Information:

The goal of the student essay is to help the OWjL staff get to know you on a more individual basis. It provides you with an opportunity to share your interests, abilities and creativity.

Choose only one question listed below to respond to in 250 words or less. Originality, uniqueness of thought, organization, correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar will help us select OWjL participants. Please remember to put your name on your essay.

Essay Prompt Question Options:
 
1. Choose an historical person, who is no longer living, that you would like to interview. Explain who this person was, why you would like to interview him/her and what question or questions you would ask during the interview.
 
2. “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you’ve imagined.” Henry David Thoreau   
What dreams do you have? What life are you imagining for yourself? What are you doing to achieve that life?

Be sure to include your name on your essay paper.  All online submissions must be in PDF format.
