OWU’s Management Economics major is a hybrid major with core classes in both business and economics. It is for students who are interested in being a leader in business, running their own company, and getting real-world experience before they graduate.
As a Management Economics major, you build a foundation in macro- and micro-economic theory and research methods, as well as the business disciplines of marketing, accounting, and finance. You can go more in-depth with advanced classes in any of those areas, or explore topics like entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, international business—or whatever interests you through an independent study under the guidance of knowledgeable faculty.
Many of our upper-level classes use case studies and discussions as a form of instruction. Students also sometimes work with local businesses or nonprofit organizations to implement class concepts in “live” management situations. A few students have even taken their ideas from entrepreneurship class and developed them into ongoing, viable businesses. Overall, we focus on developing transferable skills such as communication and critical thinking, so you can expect to be asked to analyze, present, and defend your recommendations.
Students have the opportunity and are encouraged to double major and minor either within our department or across disciplines in order to graduate with a unique skill set. For example, a student interested in business who also plays the piano could major in both at Ohio Wesleyan.
OWU students have interned in equity analysis in New York; marketing with the San Francisco 49ers; export/import, accounting, and mergers and acquisitions in Columbus; and the music business in Los Angeles. Every year several students intern overseas as a result of our global focus.
OWU faculty are outstanding scholars and researchers—and passionate teachers. They will push you, challenge you, inspire you, and work with you on your own research and creative projects.
They can even pack a 3-minute lecture with ideas, insight, and imagination. Check out our unique I³ lectures.
One of OWU’s most coveted competitive awards, the Corns Business and Entrepreneurial Scholars Program provides $5,000 per year for your junior and senior years based on your academic performance, leadership, and proven potential for achievement in business and entrepreneurship. The Norman Leonard Endowed Student Research Grant supports student-faculty collaborative research projects.
As an incoming first-year student with an interest in economics, you may apply to become an Economics Management Fellow. You’ll benefit from special classes and seminars, a generous book allowance, networking with speakers and visitors, an expense-paid travel-learning experience in New York City, and up-close personal attention from the entire economics faculty.
As part of the OWU Investment Club, you help manage an all-equity portfolio of real money. The club also participates in a variety of investment competitions.

Our graduates end up in highly successful careers ranging from social media marketing to investment banking, both in the U.S. and abroad. High proportions of our graduates eventually become CEOs or hold other senior management positions. And they love OWU—we have a very active alumni group within the Economics Department and many of them seek OWU students for their internships.
Some may earn their doctorate, but many more go on to earn an MBA, usually after working for a few years first. OWU alumni have been accepted into graduate programs at Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, Wharton, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Ohio State and many other institutions.
