Economics Department Minors
Accounting Minor
Ohio Wesleyan University is one of the few nationally ranked private liberal arts schools to offer a major or minor in accounting. By just learning the basics, you will be able to understand the roles that economics, culture and the environment play in influencing financial trends. The accounting minor can get you prepared for careers in public accounting, private industry, government and the nonprofit sector.
Requirements
A total of 5 units consisting of ACCT 217, ACCT 341, ACCT 342, and two courses from ACCT 343, ACCT 350, or ACCT 352. If the minor is combined with another major or minor in the department (business administration major, finance economics major, management economics major, business minor), ACCT 341, ACCT 348, or ACCT 349 may only be chosen as an elective course for one designation. This student could then take all three: ACCT 343, ACCT 350, and ACCT 352.
Business Minor
Preparing for the future or business-that's the focus of Ohio Wesleyan's new Business Administration major and minor. Students learn to plan, organize, direct and control the functions and processes of business in a dynamic and global economy. The program is rare in a national liberal arts setting, providing students with a high quality business education along with a liberal arts foundation, preparing them for meaningful work and life. The minor offers concentration in management and marketing.
Requirements
A minimum of 7 units consisting of BUS 105, ECON 110, ACCT 217, BUS 210, BUS 280 (0.5 unit), EITHER BUS 331 (0.5 unit) or BUS 361 (may only receive credit for one); and two upper-level business electives from among ACCT 341, ACCT 348, or any other upper-level BUS courses. BUS 307 - Topics in Business (0.5 unit each) may be repeated with different topics. Only one unit of BUS 495 may be counted. If this minor is combined with another major or minor in the department (finance economics major, accounting major, accounting minor), ACCT 341, ACCT 348, and ACCT 349 may only be chosen as an elective course for one designation. Credit cannot be earned for both BUS 331 and BUS 361.
Economics Minor
Economics is a social science that deals with making choices when resources are scarce. In addition to being used in business, economics is used to help the development of lower income nations, aid nations, dealing with problems of unemployment, figure out the best way to improve the environment, understand why consumers buy what they buy and explain what determines people's income.
Requirements
A total of 7 units consisting of ECON 110, ECON 251, ECON 252, ECON 255 or ECON 259, two other upper-level ECON courses, and one unit of MATH 105, MATH 230, or PSYC 210. Only one unit of ECON 495 may be counted.
Finance Minor
The finance minor complements a wide variety of majors by adding a dimension of analytical and practical application of finance theory. You will integrate cases on real companies with theoretical instruction in the classroom to develop a framework for financial problem solving. Topics covered include corporate finance, investments, mergers and acquisitions, accounting, international finance, and financial derivatives.
Requirements
A minimum of 5 units consisting of Acct 217, Acct 280 (0.5 units), and either Bus 331 (0.5 units) or Bus 361 (1.0 units), plus three units of electives. Finance electives include Bus 307 I, Bus 307 J, Bus 462, Bus 465, Bus 490, Bus 491, Bus 495, Bus 499. The 490 series must be finance-related and pre-approved by Prof. MacLeod. No more than one Bus 495 may count.
