Early Childhood Special Education Concentration

(leads to Early Childhood Intervention Specialist teaching license)

In addition to fulfilling requirements for the Early Childhood Major (including 12 hour reading requirement, instruction in teaching dyslexia, and PSYCH 300.12), students must take the following courses: (all meet CEC Standards and learning objectives)

  • EDUC 300.5 – Classroom Management and Positive Behavior Supports for Inclusion Students (0.5)
  • EDUC 300.6 – Inclusive Instruction and Assessment in Early Childhood Inclusion Classrooms (1.0)
  • EDUC 300.7 – Field Experience: Early Childhood Special Education (0.5) (Taken in conjunction with EDUC 300.6)
  • EDUC 300.10 – Professional, Family, and Community Collaboration in Special Education (0.5)
  • EDUC 300.11-13 – Student Teaching: Special Education (completed in conjunction with Early Childhood Student Teaching) (no additional credit)

Note: Currently, our students often elect to do the Teaching Grades 4/5 Endorsement course sequence. Students selecting the Special Education Concentration would likely do the concentration in lieu of the endorsement. Some students who enter OWU with college credits could do both the Grades 4/5 Endorsement and Early Childhood Intervention Specialist programs. Both paths allow Early Childhood students to graduate in four years.
