It’s my pleasure to invite you to Ohio Wesleyan for the 2018 President’s High School Band Festival. I hope you will enjoy your time on our beautiful campus, and I’m confident you’ll learn a great deal from OWU’s superb music faculty and from one another as you play and create music together.

Ohio Wesleyan’s Department of Music is almost as old as the University itself and a vital part of the liberal arts tradition for which Ohio Wesleyan is noted. Ohio Wesleyan offers a Bachelor of Arts degree and two professional degrees: the Bachelor of Fine Arts and the Bachelor of Music. These professional degrees speak to the importance of the arts in a liberal education.

At Ohio Wesleyan, while you may choose to major in music, you will do so in concert with other disciplines that provide a deeper, richer educational experience. History, art, foreign languages, natural science, mathematics, and the humanities all inform the study of music, giving you a greater understanding of the context in which it was created, whether it was composed in the 17th century—or yesterday. Conversely, you may pursue another major but participate in one or more musical ensembles at Ohio Wesleyan.

We hope to see you very soon. Come experience for yourself the rich musical tradition that helps make OWU such a unique and special place.

Dr. Rock Jones
President
Ohio Wesleyan University

As Chair of Ohio Wesleyan’s Department of Music, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our 54th President’s High School Band Festival website. Holding this Festival is a decades long tradition, and I am very excited to announce the 2018 event.  This year participants will be attending from many different states, not just central Ohio. Students performing in our festival band will more accurately experience what it is like at Ohio Wesleyan, where our music majors hail from all across the country.

A skillful and experienced band director and clinician, I will conduct the Honor Band. In addition you will hear our own Symphonic Wind Ensemble perform a sample of their concert repertoire.

Talk to members of our ensembles and you will find a number who major in Chemistry or Economics or Computer Science. We heartily encourage students majoring in the Liberal Arts to actively participate in our ensembles. At Ohio Wesleyan, we require that all students, regardless of their major, experience courses in the natural and social sciences, the humanities, and the arts. Participation in one of our musical ensembles is not only musically fulfilling and fun, but after a hard day of work hammering away at Calculus problems or completing lab projects for Organic Chemistry, it is downright relaxing.

Finally, I hope that participating in our President’s High School Band Festival will give you a taste of what life is like on our campus. If you are a serious student who thrives on academic challenge, works hard, and desires to excel, I hope you will come with your eyes wide open. See what Ohio Wesleyan—where we put theory into practice—can do for you. I look forward to meeting you and, just as important, hearing your music on January 20, 2018.
