Students in World Languages and Cultures can explore their passion in languages and cultures by completing an internship that will allow them to:
Internships can be one semester long (1 credit) or shorter (.25 or .50 credits). The length and focus of the internship should be consulted and approved by the WLC Department Chair the semester prior to starting the project. Once the project is approved, each student should work closely with a faculty mentor to assure the goals and objectives of the project are met.
Tess Meddings '22 was able to combine two of her academic passions by serving as the intern for Ohio Wesleyan's 2021 Hispanic Film Festival. The fall event involved screening five award-winning movies from Spain and Latin America at downtown Delaware's historic Strand Theatre. The screenings also included film discussions with guest artists.
Maureen Brennan-Reyes '21 is working as a remote storyteller volunteer, sharing stories of community-improvement work in Ecuador as a way to raise awareness and funding for the efforts.
Samantha Merino '21 is spending the semester working remotely as the Spanish interpretation and translation intern for the Canton, Ohio-based Immigrant Worker Project (IWP).
Congratulations to the 2023-2024 Phi Sigma Iota Initiates:
Phi Sigma Iota is an international honor society whose members are selected from among outstanding undergraduate and graduate students of foreign languages and literatures as well as faculties of the institutions honored with a chapter. Its primary objectives are the recognition of remarkable ability and achievement in foreign languages and literatures, and the stimulation of advanced work and individual research in these fields.
The society was founded in 1922 at Allegheny College by Dr. Henry W. Church, members of his Department of Languages, and advanced students who used to meet to discuss linguistic and literary matters. It became a national society when Beta Chapter was established at the Pennsylvania State University in April, 1925, followed less than a year after by Gamma Chapter at the College of Wooster. Iota Xi Chapter was established at Ohio Wesleyan in 1978.
