ENVS 110. Introduction to Environment & Sustainability (1 unit)Key concepts in environment and sustainability and core theories and approaches to understanding and addressing environmental challenges. The course maintains an explicit focus on the interactions between the social and the natural worlds, using concepts and theories from environmental geography, political ecology, and related fields. Students will learn about challenges in achieving environmental sustainability and will become familiar with the variety of approaches needed to create sustainable systems. Case studies, discussions and practical experiences will be used to illustrate the complexity of the field of environmental sustainability, and how interdisciplinary approaches are needed to solve complex environmental problems. Social science. Open to freshmen & sophomores. ENVS 198 (.25 credit) should be taken with this course by new program majors.

ENVS 198/498: Conversations: Toward a Sustainable Future (0.25 units, taken upon electing major [198] and senior [498] year)
This class affords a chance for new Environmental Studies and Environmental Science majors and graduating seniors to interact and engage with each other. Seniors will present work completed while at OWU and reflect on the experiences gained in internships, field study, and other theory-to-practice opportunities. Seniors will interact with and help guide new students to shape their plans for future work in their majors at OWU. ENVS 198 should be taken with either ENVS 110 or BOMI 233 by new majors. Both meet at the same time, once a week, with ENVS 498.

ENVS 399: Sustainability Practicum (1 unit)
A practicum focused on applied sustainability on campus and in the community.

ENVS 490. Independent Study (Staff)
Faculty-supervised investigation of original research problem, including literature search, research, and final completed project (paper or documentation of project). ENVS 490 may be taken with any OWU faculty member in any department, upon approval of the Director of Environmental Studies. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor prior to registration.

ENVS 491. Directed Readings (Staff)
Faculty-supervised readings on a focused environmental subject. ENVS 491 may be taken with any OWU faculty member in any department, upon approval of the Director of Environmental Studies. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor prior to registration.

ENVS 493: Topics in Environment & Sustainability (1 unit)
A seminar course focused on a selected topic. The course is taught when there is sufficient faculty and student interest in a topic not covered in depth in any other Ohio Wesleyan course.

ENVS 494: Topics in Environment & Sustainability (.5 unit)
A half-semester seminar course focused on a selected topic. The course is taught when there is sufficient faculty and student interest in a topic not covered in depth in any other Ohio Wesleyan course.

ENVS 495. Apprenticeship (Staff)
University credit for an off-campus apprenticeship or internship with a substantial intellectual and practical component focused on the environment. The Director of Environmental Studies and a supervising faculty member must approve the ENVS apprenticeship. The ENVS apprenticeship may be taken with any OWU faculty member in any department, upon approval of the Director of Environmental Studies. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor prior to registration.
