Julianne Zala ’17
OWU Fellowship Received: Baran Fellowship
The Baran Fellowship enabled me to study at the Arabic Summer Institute (ASI). ASI is a ten-week language intensive and cultural immersion program at the University of Texas, Austin. In ten weeks, I learned a year's worth of Arabic. As a Comparative Literature major, I became interested in Arabic culture and the Arabic language, but at the time Ohio Wesleyan University did not offer Arabic so the Arabic Summer Institute was a great opportunity for me. My current goal is to get a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. I have submitted my applications to four graduate programs. Meanwhile, I am working at a non-profit called MAYA Organization. I got this job through a program called Change A Heart. I hope to be in graduate school next Fall.
Note: Since this bio was originally published, Julianne was accepted into a Masters Degree Program in Comparative Literature at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Congratulations, Julianne!
