Sherwood Dodge Shankland Award for Encouragement of Teachers (2012)

2011-2012 Commencement Ceremony Excerpt

I am pleased to announce that the winner of the Sherwood Dodge Shankland Award for the Year 2012 is assistant professor of zoology, Dr. David Markwardt.

David received his B.S. in Zoology and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of WisconsinMadison. David teaches courses in cell and molecular biology and immunology. His research focuses on the mechanisms that cells use to regulate mRNA degradation in order to modulate gene expression.

David’s students describe him as, and I quote, “an extremely effective and enthusiastic professor, funny, and always available to help.” Another student writes “you can really tell that he enjoys teaching and his subject matter.” Finally this student writes “Dr. Markwardt is boss; he is awesome.”

Congratulations, David!
