Serving Kenya's first lady means changing lives
Vivianne Ngugi '85
As director of communications and head of press for Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta, the first lady of Kenya, Vivianne Ngugi ’85 never has a typical day. Ngugi might find herself planning an event, writing impact stories for the media, or even training for a marathon. But it’s the chance to change lives that she loves most.
Her position allows Ngugi to work closely on Kenyatta’s Beyond Zero initiative, which is guided by the fundamental belief that no woman will die while giving birth.
“The first lady’s Beyond Zero initiative is about improving the health and well-being of mothers and children,” Ngugi explains. The initiative is addressing issues such as reproductive health, maternal and child mortality, noncommunicable diseases, early child marriage, and female genital mutilation.
In January 2020, Ngugi planned and implemented the fifth edition of the Beyond Medical Safari, which is the anchor activity of Beyond Zero.

Remembering 1970-71 at OWU
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1971, we look back at the events that shaped their senior year on campus. Each month, we will reprint at article from The Transcript or another source to highlight news that helped shape campus life 50 years ago.
With 861 new first-year students, 16 new faculty members, Vietnam headlines, draft notices, and fresh memories of Kent State, OWU was bursting at the seams and alive with debate. George McGovern, Ralph Nader, and the band Chicago visited campus. By the end of the academic year, the national voting age was lowered to 18.
On the less monumental side of the news, mustaches were banned for OWU student athletes. And at Whitey's Nocturnal Bookstore, coffee was 15 cents and draft beer was a quarter.
