James Gest ’56, of Bellevue, WA, died on November 21, 2015, at the age of 82. He is survived by a brother, Neil Gest ’57, and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
Jim was born April 3, 1933, in Springfield, OH, and was the third son of Neil C. Gest, Sr. and Anamae Baxter Gest. He grew up in Mechanicsburg, OH, and was an outstanding high school football player.
He married Beth Mclaughlin on June 10, 1966, and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary next June. Jim is survived by his wife Beth, daughter Amy, son Jim, Jr., daughter-in-law Carri, grandsons Joshua and Bradley, granddaughter Courtney, brother Neil and his wife Betty Carol, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Bill and Don Gest.
Jim owned a business consulting business for many years in Bellevue, WA, which he sold upon his retirement in 1996. His wife Beth retired from teaching the same year so they could travel and spend time at their island retreat in Friday Harbor, San Juan Island in Puget Sound. Jim’s favorite mantra was “When are we going to the island?”  He loved to hike anywhere a good path or trail was available, either in the Cascades or the Sound.
When a new restaurant or brewpub was discovered, he was sure to notify his friends. Dim Sum and Vietnamese food were a special favorite. At home you would frequently find Jim taking over as chef in the kitchen preparing one of his own specialties. Jim was a lifelong sports enthusiast, especially baseball and football. When fall arrived you find him avidly following his favorite college team, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and the Seattle Seahawks, his favorite professional team. When football season was over, he waited patiently for baseball spring training to commence and would follow the Seattle Mariners and other teams for the remainder of the year.
Jim’s winning smile and his love of family and friends will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. A memorial has been established at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance in Seattle for James Edward Gest with all funds going to the Prostate Cancer Research Institute.

Erik McWilliams ’81, of Marina Del Rey, Santa Monica, and Topanga, CA, died on January 9, 2016, at the age of 57. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
Erik was fondly known to his patients as Dr. Erik and ran his practice out of his own healing arts center, Therapeutic Bodywork, in Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades, CA. His uncompromising and passionate drive to heal patients through the various modalities of Eastern medicine inspired all who were lucky enough to know him.
With a great sense of humor and deep passion for excellence, Erik often used the term “awesome” to express his enthusiasm for life. He will be lovingly remembered as the blond, athletically gifted 6’2” Viking Warrior who lived his life with integrity and honor.
Erik was born in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Sigrid B. McWilliams and the late Gordon B. McWilliams, and had resided in the Santa Monica area for the past 14 years. In 1977, Erik graduated from Deerfield Academy (Deerfield, MA). In 1981, he received a B.A. in Botany from Ohio Wesleyan University where he was a vital member of both the varsity football and lacrosse teams.
Erik is survived by his mother, Sigrid B. McWilliams, of Williamstown, MA, his sister Anne Tantalo and her fiancé, John Pritchard, of Williamstown, MA, his sisters Karen McWilliams of Williamstown, MA, and Lué McWilliams of New York City, his niece, Sirianna Santacrose, of Williamstown, MA, and many dear cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family is setting up a fund to be used for those who need Eastern medical care and cannot afford it. Checks can be made out to Master Hong Center and mailed to: c/o McWilliams, 138 Bulkley Street, Williamstown, MA 01267 For more on Erik's life, please visit: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/erik-mcwilliams-obituary?pid=1000000177385384

He also served for many years as faculty marshal and as secretary of the faculty. During the years OWU had a nursing program, Len taught a highly successful physics course tailored especially for nursing students. A devoted teacher and scholar, he received the Adam Poe Medal at his retirement in 1985 as professor emeritus. At a 2015 lecture at OWU, William Hsiao ’59, a preeminent economist at Harvard University, remembered how Dr. Russell mentored and advised him when he was a student. Others recall how Len lived a life based on the principles of humility, honesty, integrity, and compassion.
Len was one of two sons born to Alger and Marguerite Russell. His brother Harold, a civil engineer, died in Vietnam. His 1940 enrollment at Kalamazoo College in Michigan was interrupted by his service in the Air Force after Pearl Harbor, piloting a B-25 aircraft. He was awarded the Purple Heart for bringing his 6-man crew home safely when their plane was seriously damaged over China. Len returned to Kalamazoo post-war to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics in 1947 and to reunite with his fiancé Lavon Woodward. They were married in 1947 at Trinity Methodist Church in South Bend, IN, before moving to Columbus, OH, where Len completed a Ph.D. in nuclear physics at The Ohio State University in 1952. He worked at Monsanto in Miamisburg, OH, before joining the OWU faculty in 1954.
Len was a long-time active member of William Street United Methodist Church, serving in numerous capacities, including as a member of Bill’s Bells, a hand-bell choir. He also was a lifelong member of Kiwanis and was a skilled fisherman, canoeist, and gardener.
