DESCRIPTION:OWU alumnus E. Fred Carlisle &rsquo\;56\, author of &ldquo\;Hollow and Home: A History of Self and Place\,&rdquo\; will read from and sign copies of his new book. (Books will be available for purchase from the OWU Bookstore at the reading.)
Carlisle\, a retired English professor at Virginia Tech\, previously delivered OWU&rsquo\;s annual Vogel Lecture\, discussing his experience in &ldquo\;old&rdquo\; Delaware.&rdquo\; That material\, including information about Ohio Wesleyan\, is featured in his book along with a chapter on &ldquo\;new Delaware.&rdquo\;
According to his publishers\, Carlisle&rsquo\;s book &ldquo\;explores the ways the primary places in our lives shape the individuals we become. It proposes that place is a complex and dynamic phenomenon. Place refers to geographical and constructed places &ndash\; location\, topography\, landscape\, and buildings. It also refers to the psychological\, social\, and cultural influences at work at a given location. These elements act in concert to constitute a place.&rdquo\;
His presentation is co-sponsored by the English Department and University Advancement.
