You and your small group will camp in tents, assist with all aspects of camp life, and have a rustic, outdoor experience! During the day you’ll choose between rock climbing, canoeing, and hiking. Evenings will be spent playing games and gathering around the campfire. You’ll have small group discussions talking about college life and what it means to be a Bishop. You’ll sleep well after good meals, great friends, star gazing, and challenging your body and mind! You will return to campus and spend two days meeting and getting to know your fellow classmates, faculty, and staff through a number of different experiences before classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 22nd.

Day One (Aug 16)

  • 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.: Check-in to residence hall
  • 3:00 p.m. - All new students meeting / program
  • 4:30 p.m.: Convocation program with students and parents/family
  • 5:30 p.m.: Welcome BBQ dinner for new students and parents/family on the JAY Walk
  • 7:00 p.m. Camp Meeting with your Camp Leaders and classmates
  • 8:00 p.m. First mandatory residential floor meeting
  • Spend the night in the residence halls

 

Day Two (Aug 17)

  • Breakfast
  • Wilderness Camp group leaves for Seneca Rocks, West Virginia
  • Arrive and welcome to base camp
  • Set up camp
  • Small group time
  • Large group fun
  • Dinner

Day Three (Aug 17)

  • Breakfast
  • Bishop Spirit and traditions
  • Wilderness Activities: Campers will choose one of the following for an all-day experience:
    • Rock Climbing: Seneca Rocks is one of the best climbing destinations in the eastern U.S. and has a lot to offer climbers of all skill levels. You will learn basic climbing techniques, safety procedures, and have a blast!
    • Day Hiking: Drive to the nearby Dolly Sods Wilderness area, where you will set out for a hike through forests and along creeks and see amazing views.
    • Canoeing: The Potomac River offers excellent boating for a relaxed day on the water. Enjoy an easy float while learning the basics of river canoeing.

Day Four (Aug 19)

  • Breakfast
  • Small Group Time

  • Closing session and reflection
  • Dinner
  • Arrive back at OWU

Day Five (Aug 20)

  • Your first college class (UC 160)
  • First-Year student lunch at the Pritchard (home of President Rock Jones)
  • Meet with your academic advisor
  • Evening entertainment

Day Six (Aug 21)

  • Optional vans and shuttles to area stores
  • Events and games throughout campus
  • Oh-Wooo Welcome and Student Involvement Fair (free food and music!)
