This year the Ross Art Museum in collaboration with the Department of Environment & Sustainability, will host a series of talks on the intersection of art and the environment. This series includes artists, activists, and scholars and their efforts to confront and change the world around them for the better. All talks are free and open to the public!
9/16 (Tues) 6:30pm Celeste Malvar-Stewart - Slow Fashion and Sustainability Celeste Malvar-Stewart is a Columbus based fiber artist and fashion designer who has worked as an independent sustainable and ethical fashion designer for over 25 years. She partners with local fiber farmers to source her materials for her line of women's clothing and accessories, and considers environmental impact at all stages of a piece's life cycle.
9/23 (Tues) 6:30pm Brian Harnetty - Sound, Listening, and Our Environment Brian Harnetty is an interdisciplinary sound artist, composer, and author based in Columbus. His installation works center on contextualizing sound around place, listening, and social engagement with a strong focus on his ties to Appalachian Ohio.
10/14 (Tues) 6:30pm Terry Hermsen - Tiny Songs Poetry Reading Terry Hermsen is a poet, writer, musician, and activist working in central Ohio. Hermsen uses his poetry and music to raise awareness and spur action for environmental and climate change related issues.
10/21 (Tues) 6:30pm Jeff Dickinson - Regenerative Agriculture Jeff Dickinson is a farmer, educator, and researcher at Stratford Ecological Center in Delaware. Stratford Ecological Center is a 236 acre organic farm and nature preserve with a focus on education, food resiliency, and equitable access.
10/28 (Tues) 6:30pm John Ganis - America's Endangered Coasts An OWU Alum, John Ganis is a photographer focussing on the Atlantic and Gulf Coast of the United States that are threatened by rising sea levels. Ganis's photographic book America's Endangered Coasts pairs detailed color photographs with latitude and longitude data as well as elevation highlighting the vulnerability of overdevelopment of low-lying coastal areas.
11/11 (Tues) 6:30pm Hearts of Glass Documentary Showing at The Strand Partnering with Delaware's own Strand Theatre, and OWU's Woltemade Center for a viewing of the documentary Hearts of Glass. This film is a "portrait of social enterprise at the intersection of disability rights & sustainable, local food production".
11/18 (Tues) 6:30pm Carolina C. Barbosa - Open Data and Open Science Dr. Carolina C. Barbosa is a faculty member in OWU's Department of Environment & Sustainability and has been advocating for open science practices through her work with the grassroot networks DSOS (Data Science and Open Science in Aquatic Research) and GLEON (Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network)
The museum hosts free children's and family activities on select Sundays:
12/7 (Sun) Egg Carton Penguins Join us from 3-5 pm before the downtown Christmas parade to make your own family of tiny penguins! This craft is open to all ages. The museum is a great place to park and watch the parade.
Our popular series returns! Students are invited to stop by the Museum every Thursday from 6-8pm for crafty activities and special themed events! Student groups and organizations are welcome to collaborate with us to host an event.
