AMRS Visiting speaker, Professor Emeritus Wayne Pitard (University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana) will present a talk, "Miniature Masterpieces: the Art of the Ancient Mesopotamian Cylinder Seal" on Monday, February 25th beginning at 4:00 pm in Benes A of the HWCC. One of the most magnificent art forms of the ancient world involved carving tiny cylindar seals with ornate decorations. Thus was born one of the earliest forms of communication and 'written storytelling' centering on ancient mythic fugues. Pitard will talk about these incredible seals and the innovative technological methods he's developed to capture images of these 3-dimensional artifacts. Dr. Pitard's visit is made possible with co-sponsorship from the Earl A. Russell Lecture Fund in the Department of Religion, the Department of Fine Art, and the Middle Eastern Studies Program.
