'Lead With Curiosity'

Ohio Wesleyan Student Learns About Herself During Semester in Northern Ireland

As part of her experience in Northern Ireland, Elena Parks '26 and other international students explore the countryside.

Name: Elena Parks '26
Hometown: Reynoldsburg, Ohio
High School: Reynoldsburg High School
Major: English: Literature Concentration
Minor: Women's and Gender Studies

OWU Connection Experience: Through the Irish American Scholars program, Parks is spending the semester in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where she is attending St. Mary's University College, an independent college of Queen's University Belfast.

Why This Experience?

"My love for Irish literature, folklore, and culture led me to Ireland. Northern Ireland, in particular, has always interested me due to their complex history and cultures."

Favorite Moments

"[C]onnecting with the people and the island itself. I was fortunate enough to spend a large amount of time in the outdoors. Being able to connect with the land that influences the people of Ireland. Irish literature is deeply tied to nature in many ways. Being able to read such literature on the land that inspired it was magnificent."

When my professor at St. Mary's asked me what I wanted, I didn't have an answer. I have one now.

Lessons Learned

"I learned to lead with curiosity instead of indifference. I would have never been able to connect with my interest in Irish literature (specifically poetry) in a classroom. This experience has led me to become more interested in the context in which literature is created, rather than simply reading what is on a page.

"Through the kindness and guidance of the academics at St. Mary's, I have become more confident in my ability to lead myself to the aspects of literature that inspire me the most. Outside of academia, this experience was life-changing, as it forced me to slow down.

"I hadn't realized how fast-paced and intense American society was until I left it. The independence I gained at first scared me, as I was so used to simply following what others expected of me, inside and outside of the classroom. When my professor at St. Mary's asked me what I wanted, I didn't have an answer. I have one now."

Outside of Class

"Through St. Mary's, the international students have had multiple outings. We were fortunate enough to meet the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Tracy Kelly. We were invited to have tea and ask her questions about her career and the politics of Northern Ireland. Gerard McCann, the international advisor at St Mary's, took us on multiple outings inside and outside the city. Born and raised in Belfast, Gerard helped us understand the cultural and political aspects of Northern Ireland."

OWU Assistance

Parks says Lisa Ho, director of the International & Off-Campus Programs Office, helped her "immensely" during the study-abroad application process. "I would not have been able to experience Ireland without her patience and expertise. She truly is incredible!"

Why Ohio Wesleyan?

"I was a transfer student from Columbus State Community College. Before my CSCC graduation, I had intended to attend a state school. At the time of my graduation, OWU had announced its new relationship with CSCC, which provided me with significant financial assistance.

"I am a first-generation college attendee and second-generation American. The financial aspect of university was my main concern, as I fund my way through school myself. After looking into OWU, I knew I belonged there. …

"I wanted a small school that focused on its students. After being at OWU for nearly two years and seeing how the administration has stood up against bigotry and hate (unlike other schools), I know I made the right choice. I am incredibly blessed that OWU worked with CSCC to make it possible for students like me to attend such an incredible university."

Plans After Graduation

"I hope to attend a master's program for English Literature, then work at a university as I focus on my doctorate. OWU has multiple advisors to help me prepare for a master's program. My advisor, Professor (Stephanie) Merkel, has been a great help!"
