“I loved Ohio Wesleyan from the minute I was there until the minute I left,” said Jean Carper ’53, as she was inducted April 16 into the Ohio Foundation of Independent College’s Hall of Excellence. “So I want to thank everybody connected with Ohio Wesleyan.”

Carper, an internationally renowned medical journalist, became the ninth OWU alumnus inducted into the hall, which honors outstanding graduates from OFIC-member colleges. Carper is the New York Times best-selling author of 24 books that share medical information in layman’s terms. She also has served as a senior medical correspondent for CNN and has written for USA Weekend Magazine, The Washington Post, and The Huffington Post.

She currently is producing “Monster in the Mind,” a documentary on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia set to be released next year.

“Although she has been highly successful personally, her focus always has been on improving health for all,” said OWU President Rock Jones, who introduced Carper at the Hall of Excellence induction ceremony. “She has the heart of a true humanitarian.”

Carper lives in Florida, but remains involved with Ohio Wesleyan, where she has served as a speaker for the Sagan National Colloquium and supported multiple campus projects, including the renovation and restoration of Stuyvesant Hall.

“Ohio Wesleyan is proud to call her an alumna, a friend, and now an inductee into the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges Hall of Excellence,” Jones said at the event.
