DELAWARE, Ohio – “All sorts of qualities that are requisite for leadership success, including critical thinking, emotional intelligence and communication skills, can be linked to liberal arts subjects,” Ohio Wesleyan University graduate and Trustee-at-Large Daniel S. Glaser writes in a newly published U.S. News & World Report opinion piece.

Glaser, a 1982 OWU alumnus and president of New York-based Marsh & McLennan Companies, shares his thoughts in a May 11 commentary published as part of U.S. News & World Report’s “Knowledge Bank” series.

In the article, “STEM Fields Benefit from Liberal Arts Skills,” Glaser notes:

“It’s hard to expect undergrads to know exactly what they will become, but when it comes to preparing them for the ‘brain economy,’ a great liberal arts education is unparalleled. Students learn to reflect, synthesize and form opinions. They become questioners, challengers and seekers. They are given an opportunity to experiment, innovate, create and collaborate. It’s great preparation for business and life.”

At Ohio Wesleyan, Glaser was a double-major in economics and politics and government. In addition to earning his OWU Bachelor of Arts degree, he is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program of Harvard Business School. In January 2013, he was named president and CEO of Marsh & McLennan, a worldwide professional services, risk management, and insurance brokerage firm.
