'Doubt: A Parable'

Ohio Wesleyan to Present Award-Winning Play Feb. 27-March 2

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University's Department of Performing Arts will present five performances of John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning Best Play, "Doubt: A Parable," beginning Feb. 27.

Set in a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, "Doubt" explores the story of a strong-minded principal who wrestles with her conscience as she copes with concerns about a progressive young priest.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb 27-March 2 and at 2 p.m. March 1-2 in the Studio Theatre inside Ohio Wesleyan's Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Admission is free.

When the play debuted, Ben Brantley of The New York Times proclaimed it "an inspired study in moral uncertainty with the compellingly certain structure of an old-fashioned detective drama. Even as 'Doubt' holds your conscious attention as an intelligently measured debate play, it sends off stealth charges that go deeper emotionally."

Writer Shanley has written numerous plays, including "Sailor's Song," "Outside Mullingar," and "Danny and the Deep Blue Sea." He also has written for television and film, with his credits including "Congo," "Joe Versus the Volcano," and the Academy Award-winning "Moonstruck."

Ohio Wesleyan faculty member and 2005 graduate Bradford Sadler, MFA, will direct the university's production of "Doubt."

"This play is a parable for the world that we find ourselves in today," said Sadler, who has performed professionally as a touring actor across the Midwest and East Coast and whose expertise includes the Michael Chekhov acting technique. "We have an avalanche of information at our disposal on a daily basis, but how much in our daily lives can we actually be certain of? Less than we might think. All we can do is the best we can."

Although admission is free, seating is limited in the Studio Theatre and reservations are required by visiting owu.edu/doubt beginning two weeks before the show debuts. The play contains adult themes and is not recommended for young children. For more information, visit owu.edu/PerformingArts or call the box office at (740) 368-3855.
