OWU Connection Experience: Summer internship in Pamplona, Spain, at the University of Navarra Museum and the university’s Instituto de language y Cultura Española (ILCE) office

OWU students Campbell and Hailey MacGregor ’24 of North Ridgeville, Ohio, each spent nearly six weeks in Spain working at the University of Navarra Museum and in the ILCE office as management and administration interns and summer camp monitors.

“I worked for ‘Hi, Artist!’ at the museum,” Campbell says. “I prepared materials for social networks (Instagram), did translations, and prepared emails and presentations. I also prepared materials and monitored a group of kids in the summer camp ‘Hi Artist!’”

My Favorite Moment

“One of the kids at the summer camp drew me a picture with my name and the U.S. flag and then hugged me. I realized then that I actually had an impact on these children.”

Lessons Learned

“As far as classroom learning goes, I was able to practice the Spanish I learned in the classroom in real-world settings. In the future, I want to be a school psychologist which requires a lot of management skills, so working in the ILCE office was good experience for that and working with the children in the summer camp allowed me to get children to open up to me in different ways despite a bit of a language barrier.

Outside the Classroom

“I play for OWU rugby, and I’m a tour guide, a member of the Spanish Club and the Ski & Snowboard Club, and president of the Morgan’s Message club.”

I chose Ohio Wesleyan because when I came in as a freshman, I was still unsure what I wanted to major in, and OWU offers a plethora of different options for majors I could explore.

OWU Mentors

“Professor Eva Paris and Lisa Ho.” (Paris-Huesca, Ph.D., is an associate professor of Spanish and director of the Film Studies Program, and Ho is associate director of the Office of International and Off-Campus Programming.)

Why Ohio Wesleyan?

“I chose Ohio Wesleyan because when I came in as a freshman, I was still unsure what I wanted to major in, and OWU offers a plethora of different options for majors I could explore.

“I also chose it because studying abroad has been a goal of mine since elementary school, and the OWU Connection program here was very appealing to me to help fulfill that dream.

“Finally, I chose Ohio Wesleyan because when I came to visit and saw the campus myself, I fell in love. It’s so beautiful, everyone here is extremely kind, and I love how it’s a small school but doesn’t feel cramped! It just felt right. And after being here for three years, I know that feeling wasn’t a fluke. It is the perfect place for me.”

Plans After Graduation

“I will go to graduate school and get a degree in school psychology. Eventually, I want to be a school psychologist.”
