OWU Computes for Busy Senior

Khayyam Zubair to Share Artificial Intelligence Research on Snapchat

Khayyam Zubair, who describes himself as a “quiet clumsy geek,” is studying “Artificial Intelligence for Modern Board Games” as part of Ohio Wesleyan University’s 2016 Summer Science Research Program.

Zubair of Islamabad, Pakistan, will spend 10 weeks working with professor Sean McCulloch on the project. Zubair will share his experience this week when he takes over OWU’s Snapchat account.

A brother of Phi Gamma Delta and proud thespian, Zubair is involved in happenings all over campus during the academic year. He also works in the Office of Admission and Smith Dining Hall.

Though he’s a busy guy, Zubair took time to answer a few questions for us:

Major: Computer Science

Minors: Math, Theatre, and (possibly) Philosophy

Graduation year: 2017

Favorite place on campus: Tough one ... I'd say the fourth-floor Peale Chapel Balcony (inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center.)

What are you most proud of at OWU: My confusing major minor choice. It has made me break my comfort zone and study different things.

One goal you hope to accomplish in your lifetime: Do significant research in Artificial Intelligence.

Advice to the Class of 2020:  Take on as many new things as you comfortably can.

Favorite faculty member: Sean McCulloch. He is the guy you would want as a mentor. He is both incredibly intelligent and generously helpful, and, to top that, he has an incredible sense of humor and is approachable by anyone.

What you love about OWU: One thing … is the opportunity to take classes from such a diverse pool of subjects. I think that is a thing a lot of native students take for granted.

However, coming from a schooling system where you are put into one track of academia, being able to take theatre classes as a computer science major was like giving a new hat to a homeless person with a single winter jacket. It adds layers to your being in ways you can't quite predict.

Then, there are the professors who can give you individual attention and form friendly relationships. The small class sizes, the small green campus, the easy walk to classes, the diverse student body, Smith Dining Hall (only joking), and lest I forget free laundry!

Fun Fact: I am a New Year’s baby, as is my father.
