Snapchat Takeovers Continue

Three Students to Feature OWU Experiences in ‘My Story’

“Being busy is a normal thing at OWU,” says Kari Seymour ’18, “so I'm proud of the friends I have who help me manage my own time and encourage me.”

Seymour is hosting this week’s Snapchat takeover followed next week by Ohio Wesleyan student Shashank Sharma ’17, with special guest postings by Shelli Reeves ’16.

“I love the atmosphere that we have on campus,” says Seymour, a Spanish major and education minor from Dayton, Ohio. “Everyone is very friendly, even if you haven't met them.”

A varsity swim and dive team athlete, Spanish tutor, and Office of Admission tour guide leader, Seymour describes herself as enthusiastic, talkative, and HAPPY – yes with all caps.

Sharma, a psychology major and comparative literature minor, describes Ohio Wesleyan as diverse and active.

Shashank Sharma ’17 describes Ohio Wesleyan as diverse and active.

“Despite its size, there is never a weekday or weekend that there is nothing to do,” says Sharma, who works in the Community Service Learning Office and whose many involvements include participating on a spring break mission team and in the Terpsicorps Dance Group. “There is a club for everyone and, if there isn't, then you can just start your own, which is a surprisingly easy thing to do here.”

Sharma, who self-fundraised to support a winter break internship with Human Connections, a nonprofit “social enterprise” in Mexico, offers this advice to high school students preparing to transition to college: “Step out of your comfort zone as early as possible. It will feel alien, but you will learn and grow so much.”

Shelli Reeves ’16 is hosting the OWU Snapchat Feb. 23.

Reeves of Shaker Heights, Ohio, will interrupt Sharma’s takeover to post her experience hosting a campus visit by Gloria Dean Randle Scott, the first African American president of Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Scott is visiting campus Feb. 23, when she will enjoy lunch with students, attend a reception at the Girl Scouts of the Heartland, and present a lecture discussing “Contributions of Girls and Women of Color to Scouting.”

Seymour, a member of Delta Gamma Fraternity, and Sharma, public relations chair for Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, both look forward to sharing a look into Ohio Wesleyan’s Fraternity & Sorority Life.

“The Greek life here is also very unconventional,” says Sharma, an international student from Bhopal, India. “The men and women are involved extensively on campus and, more often than not, emerge as leaders.”

As they share their Snapchat stories, the OWU students also will share some of their favorite places on campus. For Sharma, it’s the upper level of Peale Chapel inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center. Seymour's favorite place is the JAYwalk. "It's where I see all of my friends and professors everyday.

“When choosing a college, surely consider academics and extracurriculars,” Seymour says. “But also consider what campus feels like home to you when you are there.”
