Photographed by Tariq Tarey, refugee Maombi Nsanande says, "Within the confines of the refugee camp, my greatest concern rested on ensuring my children's safety amid the unpredictability of our circumstances, all in pursuit of a haven where they could thrive unburdened by fear. Now that we are in America, I no longer fear."

Summer at the Ross

Ohio Wesleyan's Art Museum Hosting Two Exhibits Through June 29

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University's Richard M. Ross Art Museum is hosting two exhibits with special summer hours through June 29.

The first of the free exhibits is "From Struggle to Strength: Inspiring Journeys of Central Ohio's Refugee Community," featuring portrait photographs by Tariq Tarey of Columbus.

The exhibit continues the Ross Art Museum's year-long investigation of belonging and reflects humanity's universal dream for a better future. Tarey's photos and their accompanying stories are described as revealing "amazing resilience in the face of extreme adversity. More than the simple documentation of a person, each image is a profound opportunity to reflect on our own family histories and struggles."

Originally presented at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio in Lancaster, Ohio, "From Struggle to Strength" received a best exhibition award for 2024 from the Ohio Museum Association. The Ross Art Museum is proud to host the exhibition for the Ohio Wesleyan and Delaware communities.

Tarey's exhibit will include special programming on June 20 for World Refugee Day. From 1 to 2 p.m. that day, the Ross will offer family story time and crafts. At 3 p.m., Tarey will speak about his work and lead a community conversation about the refugee community in Ohio. Learn more about the artist and his work at https://tariqtarey.com.

The second summer exhibit is a retrospective of works created by former Ohio Wesleyan Fine Art professors Robert C. Vickers (who taught from 1952-1966), Steven Liebman (1970-1971), Dorothy Getz (1945-1971), Marty Kalb (1967-2007), Justin Kronewetter (1972-2008), Jim Krehbiel (1986-2020), Richard Wengenroth (1951-1971), Sallie Humphreys (1905-1943), and Jarvis Stewart (1943-1980).

For the summer, the Ross will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays through June 29. The museum then will close until Aug 19, when it reopens for fall semester. The Ross is located at 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware, and is handicap-accessible. Admission is always free.
