DELAWARE, Ohio – From May 21-24, the world-renowned Siudy Garrido Flamenco Dance Company will perform with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, directed by Gustavo Dudamel, entertaining crowds at Walt Disney Concert Hall with a breathtaking flamenco fantasia.

But before the magic begins in California, the Siudy Garrido Flamenco Dance Company will perform one show at Ohio Wesleyan University. The exclusive “Flamenco Intimo” event is scheduled for 3 p.m. May 16 in OWU’s Chappelear Drama Center, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for senior citizens and students. To purchase tickets, visit www.owu.edu/siudy.

The dance company is led by Garrido, recognized worldwide as a barrier-breaking artist, “swirling traditional and contemporary techniques into a brand of flamenco that’s entirely her own.” The New York Examiner said her recent show was “Stomp, Rent, Riverdance with a little bit of West Side Story for good measure but unique in its own creative experience. This exceptionally talented cast will set your heart on fast beat and keep you riveted!”

In addition, The New York Times has described Garrido’s dancing as “[r]aw passion that surges through the arching torsos, the staccato footwork, the rich curves of arm and wrist.” And El Nuevo Herald, Miami, reports that she performs with “a cambré and port de bras that would give envy to any classical dancer, and a fire in the body that would leave speechless many flamenco dancers.”

Since founding the dance company, Garrido has been honored with a nomination for Outstanding Choreography by New York’s Drama Desk Awards and a Municipal Dance Award (Honorable Mention) from the City of Caracas, Venezuela. She also has collaborated with organizations including the Pittsburgh Opera, Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, and Cirque du Soleil.

The performance, being held during Ohio Wesleyan’s Alumni Weekend, is sponsored by the OWU Class of 1965.
