Ohio Wesleyan Student Explores Cleveland During Summer Marketing Internship

Name: Sisi Fish ’24
Hometown: Sheboygan, Wisconsin
Major: Communication
Minor: Fine Arts (Studio)
OWU Connection Experience: Summer on the Cuyahoga internship

Fish is spending the summer living and working in the Cleveland, Ohio, area, where she is serving as the marketing and special projects intern for the Summer on the Cuyahoga (SOTC) organization. The nonprofit group works to recruit talented college students and help them explore professional, civic, and social opportunities in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. Its goal is to have some of the students return after graduation to live and work in the region.

Ohio Wesleyan is one of only nine colleges and universities nationwide whose students are eligible to fill internships coordinated by Summer on the Cuyahoga. In her role with SOTC, Fish manages its social media accounts (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn); uses her graphic design skills to create flyers, social media posts, conversation cards, and other items; and provides programming support to staff.

My Favorite Moment

“My favorite moment so far has been being able to attend various events with other interns from different schools. It's been interesting learning about the cultural differences on each college campus.”

Lessons Learned

“Through this internship, I’ve been able to improve my graphic design skills by creating content outside of my graphic design class. One of my supervisors is a graphic designer, and she has helped me a lot when it comes to quick tricks and tips.

“I’ve also learned how to better manage social media through the creation of a social media calendar. This specifically will help me with my on-campus extracurriculars, where I manage the social media accounts of a few campus organizations, including The Transcript (student newspaper) and Panhellenic Council.”

Celebrating the City

“Cleveland has been great. It’s a decent-sized city with enough things to do and experience without seeming too large and overwhelming. I’ve really liked checking out all the different boba (bubble tea) places.”

My OWU Career Connection

“I worked with Mindy Agin (assistant director for internships and externships) this past semester to help me get an internship. I doubt I would be where I am now without her help. I’ve also had various other Career Connection members help me improve my resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile. The Career Connection office overall is a fantastic resource that every student should take advantage of while at OWU.”

Why I Chose Ohio Wesleyan

“I chose OWU because of the financial aid that was offered to me.”

My Plans After Graduation

“After graduation, I hope to do something with graphic design and/or social media … some sort of creative aspect to it. OWU has helped me reach my goals through my classes and on-campus extracurriculars. The skills gained from those two things will be ones that I can use in the workplace.”
