About Esports at OWU
Esports is the world of competitive, organized video gaming. Competitors from different leagues or teams face off in the same games that are popular with at-home gamers. Internationally, esports athletes are watched by millions of fans who attend live events or tune in on TV or online. Streaming services like Twitch allow viewers to watch as their favorite teams compete in real-time.
Skill Development: Athletes will work with professional coaches and improve their skills.
Scholarships: OWU Esports Scholarships are offered each year to students who intend to participate in the new Esports program. At least ten $1,000 scholarships will be offered based on skill and merit.
Facilities: OWU opened a brand-new high-tech esports arena in Welch Hall in 2022.
Premium Tournaments: Teams will scrimmage and compete against other varsity teams through the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC).
LAN Events: Local Area Network (LAN) events will be hosted on campus throughout the year. These events will be open to the community and may offer exciting prizes.
Social Media: Follow OWU Esports on Discord, YouTube, and Twitch.
OWU Esports will field teams across several different titles and compete at the national level. In 2022-2023, students will compete at the varsity level in League of Legends, Overwatch, Valorant, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Rocket League. Students will be able to join multiple teams as their time permits and will be held to the same high standards as other OWU athletes.
OWU Esports athletes will compete through the National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC). NECC collaborates with varsity esports programs at over 100 schools to lay the groundwork in areas such as competition and scholarships, eligibility, and the path to graduation.
