Faculty Cohort Hire 2024-2025: This is the fourth consecutive cohort/cluster hire to foster innovative approaches to interdisciplinarity, pedagogical flexibility, and inclusive teaching. To date, five tenure-track faculty have been hired in the following areas:

  • American and Multi-Ethnic Literature (English)
  • Organic Chemistry (Chemistry)
  • Exercise Science (Health and Human Kinetics)
  • Accounting (Economics and Business)
  • Neuroscience (Biological Sciences and Psychology)

Inaugural Director of Teaching, Learning, and Innovation Hired: Dr. Barb Bird will enhance teaching strategies and innovation, promoting inclusivity in learning experiences.

Academic Affairs Structure: Appointment of three new division chairs will foster collaboration and support in diverse academic disciplines, promoting diversity and inclusion in academic leadership.

Moving the Needle Student Success Initiatives: Realignment of student support teams will improve strategies for underrepresented student success, reflecting OWU's commitment to equity and belonging.

Holistic Advising Programs: Introduction of holistic advising programs aims to provide inclusive support for all students, focusing on individual needs and promoting equity in academic advising.

Transfer-Friendly OWU: Updates to transfer policies to improve access and inclusion for transfer students, fostering a diverse and inclusive student body. Special focus on pipelines from community colleges that historically have an especially diverse student body.

International & Off-Campus Programs (IOCP): Significant study abroad participation; introduction of mental health support for students traveling abroad reflects a commitment to support diverse student needs.

Grants:

  • Darrell Albon and Lisa Ho (from IOCP) were awarded a $60,000 renewal grant for OWU's Leaders Across Borders program from the Great Lakes College Association (GLCA). Students from OWU, each GLCA school, and six international universities will attend monthly virtual meetings and training to develop cross-cultural communication competency, peer leadership, and conflict mediation skills. The program will culminate with a five-day leadership summit in spring 2025 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
  • Dawn Chisebe, Ashley Kennard, and Phokeng Dailey completed a letter of intent to VIA Arts Fund for $100,000 to create digital art and mural installations to disrupt the historical exclusion of Blackness in predominantly white institutions. If funded, the art will be showcased at the second biennial Melvin Van Peebles Symposium in March 2025.

OWU Library

  • Library staff secured a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Competitive grant with the help of the Division of Student Engagement and Success to move the four-person, ADA-compliant privacy pod from Beeghly Library to the lower level of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center. The grant also covered securing two additional, individual pods for installation in summer 2024. The goal of the ADA-compliant pods is to address students' needs for different study spaces. Quiet individual or small group study space was initially lost with the move to our distributed library system.
  • Library Special Collections staff recently digitized Zumari: A Journal of Black World Studies, a publication uniquely produced and held by OWU, to ensure its preservation. Work is currently underway to review transcriptions, metadata, and associated copyright. It is available for viewing through our ContentDM platform at: https://cdm15963.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/Zumari/search
  • OWU Library, along with its Ohio Five library colleagues, recently became an allied member of the Open Education Network, which is committed to "advancing open education locally and collectively, [to] … empower faculty, remove barriers to education, and enhance student success." This move reflects the shared goal of building a community of practice among the five colleges (and other liberal arts institutions) to develop capacity and greater adoption and development of open educational resources.
