When students are transported to the hospital from the Ohio Wesleyan campus, either by EMS or by OWU's Public Safety staff, they are most often taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Below are answers to frequently asked questions:
Where is the hospital?
Grady Memorial Hospital
561 W Central Ave.
Delaware, Ohio 43015
740-615-1000
What can I expect when I arrive at the hospital?
A member of the hospital's emergency department staff will check you in and connect you with the appropriate care. You will be asked for your health insurance information, so it would be helpful to have your insurance card with you if possible. If you were first seen at the OWU Health Center and your provider there recommended emergency department care, health center staff may send information with you to assist the emergency department. Both the OWU Health Center and Grady Memorial Hospital participate in Care Everywhere, a record sharing platform that will allow, with your consent, the ability to share appropriate medical information.
If you are transported to Grady by OWU Public Safety, they will contact someone from the Dean of Students staff, who will reach out to check in on you. If you are driven there by someone else or you go on your own, you can contact the OWU Public Safety office at 740-368-2222 or psafety@owu.edu if you would like the University to be aware. Hospital staff cannot contact the University, your family or anyone else without your permission.
When patients are seen in the emergency room for behavioral health concerns, it's common for the hospital staff to ask patients to change into a hospital gown and to remove jewelry or other belongings. Staff will secure those belongings and return them to the patient at a later time.
How can I return to campus?
Students can contact OWU Public Safety for a ride back to campus from Grady Hospital and can be contacted at 740-368-2222.
Will someone contact my professors about missed class time?
Someone from the Dean of Students office can reach out to professors, if requested, and share that you may miss class time due to a health related issue and that you will be in touch regarding missed assignments when you are able to. Notifications from the Dean of Students office are not intended to excuse absences but will let professors know that there is a reason for your absence.
Students can also contact their professors individually to share information that they're comfortable with. Students are responsible for following up with their professors and for discussing any missed assignments.
With questions or to request a notification to professors, contact Doug Koyle at dmkoyle@owu.edu.
What happens if I am admitted to the hospital?
When a determination is made to admit a student to Grady or to another area hospital, it's important to know that the University will not be contacted with information about where the student is admitted, why they were admitted, or when they might be discharged. Students, if they are able to, may notify Public Safety or the Dean of Students office to share any updates. As with any patient, students can also sign a Release of Information form if they wish to have information shared with the University, family members or others who may rely on updates in order to provide additional support.
OWU Public Safety will not be able to return students to campus from area hospitals other than Grady.
Are there Urgent Care centers nearby?
The closest Urgent Care to the OWU campus is the OhioHealth Urgent Care at 1710 Columbus Pike in Delaware, which is 2.5 miles south of campus. Their number is 740-549-2700.
Additional emergency and urgent care resources can be found on the Health Center's website.
