About the Major

Beginning in fall 2027, Ohio Wesleyan will offer an accredited* mechanical engineering major with graduates earning a BSME (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering) degree.

One of the broadest engineering fields, mechanical engineering graduates research, design, develop, build, and test mechanical and thermal sensors and devices, including tools, engines, and machines.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of mechanical engineers is projected to grow 9 percent from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations.

As an Ohio Wesleyan mechanical engineering major, you will complete the coursework and leading-edge liberal arts curriculum to prepare you to enter professional practice with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying the principles of science, mathematics, and engineering.
  • Develop and produce safe, efficient, and cost-effective engineering solutions that solve technical problems and create new products.
  • Communicate effectively with both technical and nontechnical groups, and apply problem-solving strategies obtained from study across divisions to engineering applications.
  • Make ethical, informed decisions and judgments regarding safe, cost-effective designs compliant with all engineering standards and governmental laws and regulations.
  • Work effectively on a team, including establishing goals, planning tasks, and meeting deadlines and objectives with an inclusive team objective.
  • Develop and conduct appropriate experimentation and analyses used to plan solutions to engineering problems.
  • Demonstrate the skill set and methodology needed to acquire and apply new knowledge.
  • Connect the technical knowledge and skills in engineering to broader societal and environmental concerns through Ohio Wesleyan's general education curriculum and capstone OWU Connection experience.

(*Ohio Wesleyan is pursuing accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), widely considered the gold standard for engineering accreditation. ABET accreditation is not awarded officially until after a program graduates its first class.)
