This award recognizes outstanding writers in the freshman composition course. This award is judged by the English Department Student Board.
Open to all students, the departmental literary awards seek to honor the best undergraduate writing in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction/essay, playwriting/screenwriting, and academic and scholarly work.
This award is given to the writer or writers who, in the judgment of the English Department of the University, have shown "the greatest proficiency and promise in creative writing."
In honor of Dr. Ernest F. Amy who was a faculty member of the English Department from 1914 to his retirement in 1953, a book award is given annually to a promising junior English major.
