May 2021 Move-Out Guide

This document gives you specific details on all the information you need to properly check out of your current housing assignment including dates, procedures, and answers to your most frequently asked questions.

Checkout Procedures

Students must check out after removing all personal belongings, and after cleaning the room.  More details about cleaning are offered in Section C.  Failure to check out by either Express Checkout or In-Person Checkout will result in a $25 fine.  Each individual student is responsible for their own check-out procedures.  Do not assign your responsibilities to a friend, hall staff member, or Housekeeping personnel.  If you don’t turn in your key upon checkout, there is a $144 fine for the cost of a new key and the re-coring of the lock on the door.  You can check out in one of two ways:

Express Checkout Process

An express checkout allows you to check out of your space at any time.  You can locate an express checkout envelope at the Residential Life Late Night Desk located in the Welch Lobby or outside the Residential Life Office in HWCC 213.  You'll fill out the envelope, place your keys (no mailbox keys) inside and seal the envelope, and place it in the express checkout boxes present at both locations.  You must have removed all of your personal belongings from your room and cleaned it prior to using the express checkout process.  Damage to your room/suite, failing to remove personal items, and/or not adequately cleaning your room/suite will result in additional charges to your student account.

In-Person Checkout Process

Once you have removed all of your personal possessions from your room, returned all original furnishings to the room, and cleaned the room, you should proceed to the checkout area of your residence hall during the times listed below so that an RA/Moderator can check you out of your room.  The RA/Moderator will collect your key.  RA/Moderators will not check you out of your room until you have removed all of your belongings and are ready to give up your key and lock the door.  If you need to check-out at a time outside of the in-person check-out schedule, you will need to complete an Express Checkout.

Late Stay Request

If you have extenuating circumstances that necessitate a request to remain on campus after the facilities close, please email  Because we are preparing for summer projects, summer housing, and summer conferences, we may or may not be able to approve requests.  If you are requesting to stay past Commencement, please note that you will be expected to complete the summer housing application and contract, then move to our summer housing facility. Note that there are associated fees for summer housing.  The deadline for all requests is Friday, May 21.

May Move-out Recycling/Donations

We are pleased to make it easy for students to donate their gently used items or other things that they would rather not take home with them rather than sending them to a landfill.  Students may donate items at the portable storage units that will be located near bulk dumpsters in the residential parking areas.  Items will be donated to the local Goodwill store in Delaware.   As a part of our May Move-Out initiative, students are reminded that anything that they brought into their residence should be taken home, donated at the portable storage units, or disposed of in the dumpsters provided.

Storage Policy

There is no storage available on campus for student belongings.  There are local storage facilities available for reasonable summer rates.  Public Safety also stores bicycles on campus over the summer.
