Music Theater Workshop is an integral component of the vocal performance curriculum at OWU and provides operatic and musical theater experiences essential to all undergraduate voice majors. The class focuses on role preparation, acting technique, stage movement, and effective auditioning. Each year this select ensemble performs programs of scenes from opera, operetta, and musical theater, as well as occasionally mounting fully-staged productions with orchestra. The opera program through its educational out-reach initiatives also regularly perform for local elementary and middle schools. This year the opera program will be bringing John Davies’s Little Red Riding Hood to over 1000 area school children.

In the summer of 2010 the director of the opera program, Jason Hiester was given a Theory-to-Practice Grant to take seven students to Salzburg, Austria. While there, the Music Theater Workshop students participated in workshops, lessons, masterclass, and attended the Salzburg Music Festival.

Biennially, the Music department and the Theater department work together to produce a fully staged musical. Past Productions from the last 10 years include; Little Shop of Horrors (2017), Mame (2010), Carousel (2008), Out of this World (2006), Camelot (2004) and Zombies from Beyond (2002).
