Music, theatre, and dance classes, productions, and ensembles have access to a wide range of performance and practice spaces, from an intimate theatre space, to the Jannuzi Dance Studio, to grand Gray Chapel.
Chappelear houses the University's two main theatres, Main Stage and Studio Theatre. The Main Stage, a versatile theatre complex, is a convertible proscenium, which can be arranged as thrust or arena space. Our Studio Theatre is a flexible “black box” that houses student work and major productions. Both theatres are supported by rehearsal space, scenery, and costume shops, as well as sophisticated lighting and sound capability.
Located in University Hall, Gray Chapel seats 1,100 and is the region’s most outstanding concert hall. It now houses the Rexford Keller Memorial Organ, the largest of six Klais organs in the United States, and it serves primarily as a venue for music, dance, lectures, and more.
Housed in Simpson Querrey Fitness Center, the 2,425-square-foot Jannuzi Dance Studio features collapsible seating for 80 and a sprung hardwood floor that cushions the landings and protects the joints of OWU dancers. Wall mirrors and ballet barres, combined with extensive sound and video capabilities, make the studio a state-of-the-art venue for instruction and practice.
OWU's home base for music, Sanborn Hall contains:
* 57 classrooms and teaching studios
* 29 practice rooms all acoustically treated, spacious, windowed, and containing Baldwin studio pianos
* 229-seat Jemison Auditorium, which is used for solo and chamber music performances
* an instrumental rehearsal room for bands and orchestra
* rehearsal space for the Choral Art Society, vocal ensembles, and Opera Theater
* an electronic music studio equipped with hardware and software for use in MIDI and electro-acoustic composition
* and a keyboard lab.
